Morgantown, W.Va. – Wyoming Nursing & Rehabilitation Center (N&RC) has won another Best Practice Award at the West Virginia Health Care Association (WVHCA) annual awards banquet at the Marriott Waterfront Place hotel in Morgantown on May 9th.
The award-winning center in New Richmond, W.Va. won the “Best Practice Award” for their annual “Mall Day” event that brings the shopping experience to the facility so patients can Christmas shop for friends and family. The purpose of this award is to recognize a member facility’s unique program that has achieved significant positive results and a desired outcome for other facilities to mimic.
“Before this, we were taking five residents and five employees at a time to the department store,” said Mary Nelson, Activities Director for Wyoming N&RC. “I thought to myself; there had to be a better way.”
So, Nelson called the Oceana Magic Mart and proposed an out-of-the-box idea; to bring the department store to the residents at the center. At first the store was a little reluctant to the idea. However, after seeing the difference has been back each year. The vendors commented that it touched their hearts to can give back to the seniors in the facility.
Nelson calls the store and provides the size of clothing and shoes for residents at the center, as well as a list of other items she believes the residents would like or find useful. The store brings toys so the patients can shop for their grandchildren.
Magic Mart, who has more than 20 locations located in West Virginia, Virginia and North Carolina, and vendors selling jewelry, wreaths and homemade peanut butter balls and candy set-up shop for the annual “Mall Day,” and patients can shop with and for their families.
This is the second “Best Practice Award” Wyoming N&RC has won. The facility received the recognition in 2011 for their innovative buffet dining system that provides their patients with more menu choices and restaurant style dining.

Wyoming N&RC is a member of the WVHCA, a statewide nonprofit organization of long-term care facilities and assisted living communities affiliated with the American Health Care Association and the National Center for Assisted Living.
Wyoming N&RC is a recipient of the 2016 Silver Achievement in Quality Award from the American Health Care Association/National Center for Assisted Living.
